Giving Back
Marjuan Canady works in her community as an Arts Educator and Cultural Worker. She has worked as a teaching artist at Children’s Aid Society, The Studio School, Duke Ellington School of the Arts, Epic Models and Fillmore Arts Center.
She initiated and led the Active Arts program at Fordham University. Her focus lies heavily on using the theater arts to engage with young people on effective educational practices as well as educating the larger community on African Diaspora women’s history.
In February and March 2011, Ms. Canady produced a college and community tour of her one-woman play Girls! Girls? Girls. serving over 500 young people nationwide. Some venues included: Youth Educational Entrepreneur Program in Baltimore, MD, Marble Hill High School in Bronx, NY, Erasmus High School in Brooklyn, NY, Central State University, St. John’s University, Columbia University, Fordham University and Women on Wednesday’s Cultural Program in New York City.
In the summer of 2011 she served as Workshop Director for College Summit’s Summer Program leading a core staff of young professionals and college preparatory educators serving three hundred students at Daemen College and Yale University. In February 2013, Ms. Canady will direct the first ever production of “The Vagina Monologues” in Tobago, West Indies for the International V-Day Campaign. Sponsored by The Tobago Indo-Multicultural Association, local women will have the opportunity to perform and engage on critical issues such as stress management and domestic violence. She is a member of The Movement Theater Company and Women Arts.
